Tesla in India

Tesla in India?

After months of speculation, we have finally received the confirmation that, yes, indeed, Tesla will launch its car in India in 2021. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has confirmed the entry of Tesla into the Indian market. It will be launched in Q1 of 2021 as per sources. Now that you know Tesla is starting their innings in India, your next question might be which model Tesla will launch in India. As we all know, Tesla makes electric vehicles but now that they also make infinitely scalable clean energy generation and storage products.

Tesla, which was founded in 2003 by a group of engineers, launched its first model in 2008; it was Model S. It was the world’s first-ever premium all-electric sedan, and it became the best car in its class. The three parameters are set by Tesla; safety, performance, and efficiency. Model S combined all three parameters and therefore became the best in its category.

Tesla currently has four models in its portfolio Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y. Model 3 is a low-priced, high-volume electric vehicle. It was first announced in 2026, and production began in 2017. The first model to be launched in India will be the entry-level Model 3 electric sedan. Model 3 is the most affordable Tesla model amongst all of the four offered by the company.

Tesla Model 3 is the world’s best-selling all-electric car. Model 3 resembles the looks of Model S but a smaller version of it. It comes with two 18-inch alloy wheel options; also, you can opt for bigger 20-inch wheels with Pirelli P Zero performance tyres, a carbon rear spoiler, and sporty pedals. It is yet to be seen what variants will Tesla offer here in India.

Tesla Model 3 comes loaded with features like you can use your smartphone as a key and access all driver controls in the central 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system with over-the-air updates. It has an all-glass roof that extends from front to back. It also features 12-way power-adjustable heated front seats, a 14-speaker audio system, and two wireless charging ports. The best part of Model 3 is it has an Autopilot mode. Autopilot enables the car to steer, accelerate, and brake automatically within its lane. Whether these top-end premium features will arrive in India or not is yet to be seen.

The Model 3 is offered in three electric powertrain options: Standard Plus, Long Range, and Performance. The Standard Plus utilizes a rear-wheel drivetrain and pushes a claimed 423km range on a single charge in the US. The Long Range and Performance trims utilize a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup and deliver a claimed 568km and 507km range. Unsurprisingly, the Performance trim is the fastest, with a 0-97kmph sprint time of just 3.1 seconds and a top speed of 261kmph. The India-spec Model 3 could start with the Standard Plus variant, with the other two trims likely to be introduced later.

The Model 3 sedan is expected to be priced at about ₹55-60 lakh, and reports indicate that the bookings will resume in India from next month. So fasten your seatbelt’s and expect a superb ride in Model 3.
